THE FELL PONY

Best International Short Film at the Equus Film Festival, New York

When the Fell Pony Society was formed in 1922 its aim was "to foster and keep pure the old breed of pony," and later "to promote knowledge of all matters concerning the Fell Pony breed."

This film about Fell pony type and conformation aims to describe the breed as we see it a hundred years later, as a basis for the next century.

A modern day dreamtime. The freedom of a life on the road with horses in an English Summer.

Travelling the length of the country and back again with a pair of horses and gypsy caravan following a band of Travellers with handcarts, goats, donkeys and ponies along green lanes to the fairs and festivals of England.

Shot by Tom LLoyd on a hand-cranked clockwork Russian super 8mm camera during a 9 month journey.

A 60 minute documentary, twenty years in the making on the road with Fell ponies to the biggest Gypsy horse fair in Europe, following father and son Walter and Tom Lloyd on their annual pilgrimage to Appleby Fair.
